Born in Guarulhos-São Paulo, Brazil, in 1976, Rodrigo Lima is one of the most active composers of his generation, his music has been presented at festivals and concert halls in Brazil, Latin America, Europe and the USA. He started his musical education studying piano and composition with Estércio Marquez Cunha. In 2005 he graduated from the Music Department at the University of Brasília (UNB), where he studied with Sérgio Nogueira (composition), Conrado Silva (electroacoustic music) and Jorge Antunes (counterpoint). He continued his studies at the Arts Institute of UNICAMP, where he completed his Master's in Creative Processes under the guidance of composer Silvio Ferraz. He also took courses with composers Stefano Gervasoni (Italy), Claude Ledoux (Belgium) and Emmanuel Nunes (Portugal). He also developed extensive experience with Brazilian music and jazz, working professionally as a drummer for over 12 years.

 

His music has been presented at festivals and concert halls in Brazil, Latin America, Europe and the USA, with emphasis on the 18th World Saxophone Congress and Festival in Zagreb 2018 (Croatia); Focus! 2017 | The Music of Latin America - The Juilliard School - New York (USA); Europalia International Arts Festival 2011 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam (Holland),

32nd International Festival of Contemporary Music in Valencia 2010(Spain), RISUONANZE Incontri di Nuove Musiche (Italy, 2016) and  Biennial of Contemporary Brazilian Music (Brazil).

 

In 2008, he was resident composer of the 5th International Forum of Young Composers in Paris and Lyon with Ensemble Aleph. In 2015, his work Antiphonas for saxophone and ensemble premiered at the 17th World Saxophone Congress & Festival 2015 in Strasbourg (France). In 2016, he received the order from the Festival International des Arts from Bordeaux (France) to compose the work Txury-ò: ‘way where you goo sol’ inspired by the cosmology of the Karajá Indians.

 

He has obtained some Prizes in National and International Competitions: Prize International Iberoamerican Rodolfo Halffter 2008 of Composition (Mexico), Prize Francisco Guerreiro Martín at the ‘XVII Premio Jóvenes Compositores 2006 Fundación Autor’ in Madrid (Spain), Prize for Classical Composition of the National Arts Foundation 2010 (Brazil), 1st Award of theCamargo Guarnieri National Composition Competition 2005 (Brazil), and others.

Limas Music has been performed by the Ensemble Aleph (France), Abstrai Ensemble (Brazil), Camerata de las Amércicas (Mexico), Sonor Ensemble (Spain), Camerata Aberta (Brazil), Proxima Centauri (France), Ensemble Linea (France) , Orchestrutopica (Lisbon-Portugal), 'Ensemble Brasileiro de Música Moderna' (Brazil),  Symphonic Orchestra of the São Paulo University (Brazil), Quinteto Brasília (Brazil), conductors: Guillaume Bourgogne (France), Luis Aguirre (Spain ), Cesário Costa (Portugal), Kirk Trevor (England) and Cláudio Cruz (Brazil).

Rodrigo Lima is professor of composition at the 'EMESP- School of Music of São Paulo State. His works are published byUniversal Edition (Vienna), Brazilian Academy of Music, Da Vinci Edition (Japan) and Babel Scores in Paris (France). Lima is a member of the General Society of Authors and Editors  (SGAE) in Spain.
